Selçuk Yaşar’ın Türkiye Cumhuriyeti’nin temelini oluşturan gençliğe ve çağdaşlık ülküsüne adayarak gerçekleştirdiği hedefi Yaşar Üniversitesi, Selçuk Yaşar Ödülü ile kurucusunun vizyon mirasını Türkiye’nin dört bir yanına taşıyor. Bu yıl ilk kez verilecek Selçuk Yaşar Ödülü, yeniliği, toplumsal faydayı ve geleceğin Türkiye’sini hedefleyen cesur insanların çalışmalarını kutlamayı, başarılarını tüm Türkiye’ye duyurmayı ve Türkiye’den dünyaya açılan yeni hayallere güç vermeyi hedefliyor.

ORD. PROF. DR. NİYAZİ SERDAR SARIÇİFTÇİ

Born in Konya, Turkey in 1961, Ord. Prof. Niyazi Serdar SARIÇİFTÇİ graduated from İstanbul St. George’s Austrian High School ranking first in September 1980 and continued with his major study in Vienna, Austria. After earning his degree in Physics from the University of Vienna, Sarıçiftçi also earned his doctoral degree from the same faculty in 1989 and worked as a post-doc assistant at the 2nd Chair of Physics within the University of Stuttgart between 1989-1992.  Upon the invitation made by Prof. Alan Heeger who won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 2000, Sarıçiftçi conducted studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara between 1992-1996. Along with these studies where he discovered the photo-physical properties needed for solar electricity generation with semiconducting polymers, Sarıçiftçi also co-conducted a study with Prof. Alan Heeger, which became the first patent and study on plastic organic solar cells (1992). In 1996, Sarıçiftçi was granted the title of professor ordinarius by the Austrian Government and appointed as the Director of Institute for Physical Chemistry of Johannes Kepler University in Linz, Austria.

 

   He has over 600 articles published in various international journals and 8 patents, as well as 9 scientific books published. Ord. Prof. Sarıçiftçi was cited over 75000 times (h=99 Web of Science, h=118 Google Scholars), which placed him as 14# in the world’s best material scientist ranking by Institute for Scientific Information in March 2011. He won the prizes “Energy Globe” in 2003 and “Grünpreis” in 2001. Sarıçiftçi subsequently received the Turkish National Science Award in 2006 in Turkey, as well as the scientist of the year award in 2008, the Humanity Medal of Linz, and the Austrian-Nobel prize Wittgenstein Award in 2012 in Austria. The Romanian University of Bucharest and the Finland’s Åbo Academy deemed him worthy of the title of honorary doctor. Ord. Prof. Sarıçiftçi is a member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) and the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA). Ord. Prof. Sarıçiftçi also received TÜBA Science Award in 2015.
